Accessibility Guide

Accessibility at Sea Synergy

Welcome to Sea Synergy! We are passionately committed to connecting people of all abilities with our beautiful oceans and the Wild Atlantic Way. We continuously strive to make our coastal activities, research opportunities, workshops, and educational experiences as inclusive and accessible as possible.

This guide is designed to help you understand what to expect when planning your visit, whether you are coming to our Marine Awareness Center or joining us in the field.

Planning Your Visit & Booking

We welcome you to contact us directly in advance of your booking so that we can understand your specific requirements and best accommodate your needs.

  • Accessible Booking Options: You can book our activities online, via email at [email protected], or by calling us directly at +353 087 455 4034.
  • Arrival Window: For field activities, shore safaris, or water tours, we warmly recommend arriving 30 minutes early. This gives our team plenty of dedicated time to assist with layout orientations, specialized safety equipment fitting, or boarding support without any rush.
  • Weather & Safety Updates: Since ocean and coastal safety depend entirely on the weather, we proactively contact all participants via phone or email if forecast conditions are unsuitable for certain accessibility or mobility profiles.

Physical & Outdoor Considerations

Our activities take place in beautiful, natural coastal communities, including Cahersiveen, Waterville, and Derrynane, Co. Kerry. Because these are wild environments, terrain and physical demands vary:

  • Coastal & Seashore Surfaces: Seashore safaris and guided coastal walks take place on mixed natural terrain, which may include uneven sand, wet pebbles, rock pools, or public slipways typical of Ireland’s coastline.
  • Water-Based Activities (Snorkeling, Kayaking, SUP): Our water-based activities require a comfortable level of water confidence. Our staff are trained to provide physical assistance and close guidance, but participants must be able to maintain a stable seating position for kayaking or handle physical equipment setups.
  • Parking & Facilities: Public parking (including designated accessible spaces) and public toilet facilities are located near our primary departure and meeting points, though transit distances across natural beach terrain vary depending on the specific tour.

Sensory & Communication Support

We work hard to make our marine biology and environmental education engaging through multiple sensory channels:

  • Visual Adaptations: Our guides provide descriptive, highly verbal commentary during seashore walks, marine center tours, and outdoor safaris – describing local wildlife, marine habitats, and landmarks for guests with limited sight or visual impairments.
  • Hearing & Visual Cues: All vital outdoor safety briefings and workshops incorporate clear visual demonstrations, gestures, and written reference materials upon request to support visitors who are deaf or hard-of-hearing.
  • Environmental Factors at Sea: Outdoor activities expose participants to open marine elements, including cool ocean winds, bright glare, moving waves, and occasional sea spray. We recommend dressing in warm layers and waterproof clothing even on bright summer days.

Safety Equipment & Crew Training

  • Flotation & Life Jackets: We provide fully certified, adjustable life jackets and safety gear in a wide range of sizes for all water-based and shoreline adventures.
  • Trained Support Crew: Our team is highly qualified in ocean safety, outdoor group management, and standard First Aid. They are passionate, knowledgeable, and always ready to adapt our educational delivery to ensure you feel secure and supported.
