Join Sea Synergy for an immersive, hands-on internship on the Wild Atlantic Way
Sea Synergy offers a unique internship experience based in the beautiful coastal communities of Cahersiveen, Waterville and Derrynane, Co. Kerry. Our internships give motivated individuals the chance to gain real-world experience in marine education, research, outreach, and coastal outdoor activities, all while becoming part of a supportive team passionate about connecting people with the ocean.
We welcome interns who are curious, enthusiastic, and eager to learn — whether you’re developing scientific skills, practising environmental education, building your communication and marketing abilities, or looking for a combination of all three.

Our Internship Pathways
1. Research Internship
Work on real marine biodiversity and restoration projects, including:
- Oyster restoration project
- Seagrass Habitat project
- Seashore Surveys (Whales, Seals, Birds, etc.)
- Citizen Science
- Data collection, entering & mapping
- Scientific outreach to the local community
2. Education & Activities Internship
Support our team delivering environmental education and water-based activities, such as:
- Children’s summer sea camps
- Seashore safaris & guided walks
- Snorkel and kayak/SUP activities
- Community events & outreach
- Helping visitors connect with their coastal environment
3. Marketing & Outreach Internship
Help tell the story of our marine world and Sea Synergy’s work by assisting with:
- Social media content & campaigns
- Photography / videography
- Website updates
- Posters, signage & promotions
- Event support
- Community engagement
4. Mixed Internship (Build-your-own experience)
Perfect for those who want to explore more than one area. Mix Research, Education/Activities, and Marketing & Outreach depending on your interests.
Timeframe & Commitment
- Ideal period: May or June to September
- Minimum commitment: 2 months
- Internships may also take place in spring or autumn (March–October)

Note: Internships are unpaid. Many interns apply through Erasmus+ or other funding programmes. Sea Synergy may subsidise training or support 1–2 funded positions depending on grants.
Accommodation & Living
Interns must arrange their own accommodation, but Sea Synergy will help by sharing leads, local contacts, and affordable options whenever possible.
Requirements
- Be 18 or older
- Be motivated, engaged, and able to work independently
- Be comfortable outdoors in all weather
- Have First Aid certification (or be willing to complete it in June)
- Complete Garda Vetting (provided after acceptance)
- Have water confidence for research or activity-based internships
- Ideally have your own transport (helpful but not essential)

Student Thesis Opportunities
Are you a university student looking for a meaningful thesis project in marine biology, ecology, environmental science, coastal management or outdoor education? Sea Synergy is delighted to welcome motivated students who wish to complete their undergraduate or postgraduate thesis in Ireland’s rich marine environment.
Based along the stunning coastline of Cahersiveen and Derrynane, we offer a unique opportunity to carry out field-based research while becoming part of a supportive, experienced and passionate team.
What We Offer Students

Our Collaboration Agreement
In exchange for our mentorship, support and use of facilities, we ask that students:
- Assist the Sea Synergy team with seasonal activities (e.g., surveys, outreach events, summer camps, or admin tasks)
- Become part of the Sea Synergy community and contribute positively to ongoing projects
- Acknowledge Sea Synergy’s support in their thesis and any related publications
- Share research findings with our team and the local community

- Spring: March–May

- Minimum recommended duration: 8 weeks, depending on research scope
