LUCY EVANS’S INTERNSHIP EXPERIENCE

My internship with Sea Synergy provided far more experience than I could have imagined in just two and a half months. During my placement, I was involved in a wide range of activities including public outreach through social media, assisting in delivering marine biology modules in schools, identifying seashore species, and assisting with various research activities including seashore, seagrass and whale and dolphin watching surveys. I also helped in Marine creature features, even showcasing one by myself at Kenmare pier for Biodiversity week.

One of the most valuable aspects of my internship was observing how a small but highly dedicated team operates. Despite an extremely busy schedule balancing research, educational programmes, water-based activities, beach clean-ups, and school visits, the team consistently maintained a positive attitude and remained focused on their conservation goals. I found it inspiring to work alongside such passionate individuals. I particularly admired the work of Sea Synergy’s director, Lucy Hunt, whose vision has created an organisation that not only delivers marine education directly to students and the public, but also indirectly raises awareness among tourists and local communities through activities led by professional biologists. It was rewarding to witness people leave these experiences with a greater appreciation and understanding of Kerry’s marine environment.

I also learned a great deal from my manager, Elis, whose dedication and organisational skills provided valuable insight into the realities of managing a busy conservation organisation while also actively being involved. Similarly, our research officer Lukas greatly improved my fieldwork and species identification skills through his extensive knowledge and enthusiasm.

Beyond technical skills, this internship significantly increased my confidence. I was trusted to independently lead beach clean-ups, assist in guided seashore safaris for children, helping in snorkelling tours, and assist with kayaking and stand-up paddleboarding activities. I was also encouraged to develop an inclusivity project aimed at improving accessibility within conservation activities. Additional opportunities, such as attending the Fair Seas World Ocean Day Conference in Cork City Hall, broadened my understanding of marine conservation and the many stakeholders involved.

Attending various festivals with our Seasynergy Marine Creature Feature stalls at the Wildminds festival, Discover derrynane and biodiversity week has greatly enhanced my confidence delivering information to a wide range of people. Overall, this internship has been invaluable to both my personal and professional development, helping to shape my future career goals and providing experiences that I will carry forward throughout my career.
